Narrative:
We were working socal approach into sna when I made the announcement for our flight attendants to prepare for landing. During the announcement I heard the first officer repeat back a clearance to 2000 ft. After the announcement I verified with the first officer the clearance to 2000 ft, but didn't confirm it with approach. Later tower told us we were below minimum altitude and to climb to 3000 ft. There was no conflict or terrain problem. According to approach in a later phone call, they had cleared us only to 3000 ft. Making announcements below sterile cockpit altitude per SOP, approach not hearing the readback, and my not confirming with approach control the altitude assigned, all led to the error. Supplemental information from acn 337536: we were initially vectored for a visual approach and advised approach control that we may not be able to keep the field in sight due to haze and sunset looking west. We were cleared to 2000 ft MSL and given a vector for an ILS. We were then told to climb to 3000 ft MSL for terrain and cleared for the ILS approach.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: A B757 FLC DSNDED BELOW THEIR ASSIGNED ALT DURING VECTORS FOR AN ILS AT SNA. THE APCH CTLR TOLD THE FLC THAT THEY WERE BELOW THE MINIMUM ALT AND TO CLB TO 3000 FT.
Narrative: WE WERE WORKING SOCAL APCH INTO SNA WHEN I MADE THE ANNOUNCEMENT FOR OUR FLT ATTENDANTS TO PREPARE FOR LNDG. DURING THE ANNOUNCEMENT I HEARD THE FO REPEAT BACK A CLRNC TO 2000 FT. AFTER THE ANNOUNCEMENT I VERIFIED WITH THE FO THE CLRNC TO 2000 FT, BUT DIDN'T CONFIRM IT WITH APCH. LATER TWR TOLD US WE WERE BELOW MINIMUM ALT AND TO CLB TO 3000 FT. THERE WAS NO CONFLICT OR TERRAIN PROB. ACCORDING TO APCH IN A LATER PHONE CALL, THEY HAD CLRED US ONLY TO 3000 FT. MAKING ANNOUNCEMENTS BELOW STERILE COCKPIT ALT PER SOP, APCH NOT HEARING THE READBACK, AND MY NOT CONFIRMING WITH APCH CTL THE ALT ASSIGNED, ALL LED TO THE ERROR. SUPPLEMENTAL INFO FROM ACN 337536: WE WERE INITIALLY VECTORED FOR A VISUAL APCH AND ADVISED APCH CTL THAT WE MAY NOT BE ABLE TO KEEP THE FIELD IN SIGHT DUE TO HAZE AND SUNSET LOOKING W. WE WERE CLRED TO 2000 FT MSL AND GIVEN A VECTOR FOR AN ILS. WE WERE THEN TOLD TO CLB TO 3000 FT MSL FOR TERRAIN AND CLRED FOR THE ILS APCH.
