Narrative:
We took off from gai VFR and contacted dulles approach. Dulles cleared us to climb and maintain 8500 ft. I was looking at my map and climbed to approximately 8800 ft when I noticed the altitude and immediately descended to 8500 ft. Dulles did say we were cleared to 8500 ft -- obviously they saw our error.
