Narrative:
Flying VFR from ggp to mke I was cruising at 10500 ft MSL along the lakeshore. I was above ord class B airspace. At 40 NM southeast of mke, I called mke approach. Approach gave me a transponder code. I read back the code and told them I was starting down. About 1 min later, approach said, 'radar contact maintain 9500 ft, I was not in his airspace yet.' just then I checked my sectional. I knew ord class B went until 10000 ft MSL, but I thought I was northeast of it. Factors contributing were communications with mke approach before radar contact was established. I stopped looking at the sectional thinking mke would take over. I did have mke in sight when I called approach. The correct action would have been to continue using the sectional the entire time.

Title: PLT OF AN SMA SEL DSNDED EARLY DURING A VFR OVERFLT OF CLASS B AIRSPACE RESULTING IN ERRONEOUS PENETRATION OF THAT AIRSPACE SINCE HE HAD NO CONTACT WITH THAT AIRSPACE, BUT WAS IN CONTACT WITH HIS DEST APCH FACILITY APPROX 40 MI AHEAD.
Narrative: FLYING VFR FROM GGP TO MKE I WAS CRUISING AT 10500 FT MSL ALONG THE LAKESHORE. I WAS ABOVE ORD CLASS B AIRSPACE. AT 40 NM SE OF MKE, I CALLED MKE APCH. APCH GAVE ME A XPONDER CODE. I READ BACK THE CODE AND TOLD THEM I WAS STARTING DOWN. ABOUT 1 MIN LATER, APCH SAID, 'RADAR CONTACT MAINTAIN 9500 FT, I WAS NOT IN HIS AIRSPACE YET.' JUST THEN I CHKED MY SECTIONAL. I KNEW ORD CLASS B WENT UNTIL 10000 FT MSL, BUT I THOUGHT I WAS NE OF IT. FACTORS CONTRIBUTING WERE COMS WITH MKE APCH BEFORE RADAR CONTACT WAS ESTABLISHED. I STOPPED LOOKING AT THE SECTIONAL THINKING MKE WOULD TAKE OVER. I DID HAVE MKE IN SIGHT WHEN I CALLED APCH. THE CORRECT ACTION WOULD HAVE BEEN TO CONTINUE USING THE SECTIONAL THE ENTIRE TIME.
