Narrative:
On departure, we were given a 180 degree turn and clearance to 10000 ft. The first officer mistakenly understood 11000 ft and put that in the altitude alert. While hand-flying, turning, cleaning up and doing checklists, I missed his mistake and climbed to 10500 ft when ATC notified us of our error. Supplemental information from acn 338450: at 10500 ft, the controller said confirm climb to 10000 ft and I said 'sorry I thought we were cleared to 11000 ft, we are correcting back to 10000 ft.' I think I made this mistake because departure control cleared us to 'one-zero thousand ft,' instead of 'ten thousand ft' and I thought I heard 'one-one thousand ft.' the phrases 'ten' and 'eleven' are better and clearer than 'one-zero' or 'one- one.'
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: ALTDEV. MISCOM BTWN ATC AND FLC. CLRNC TO 10000 FT AND FLC MISHEARD AS 11000 FT. CTLR INTERVENED WHEN FLC CLBED PAST 10000 FT.
Narrative: ON DEP, WE WERE GIVEN A 180 DEG TURN AND CLRNC TO 10000 FT. THE FO MISTAKENLY UNDERSTOOD 11000 FT AND PUT THAT IN THE ALT ALERT. WHILE HAND-FLYING, TURNING, CLEANING UP AND DOING CHKLISTS, I MISSED HIS MISTAKE AND CLBED TO 10500 FT WHEN ATC NOTIFIED US OF OUR ERROR. SUPPLEMENTAL INFO FROM ACN 338450: AT 10500 FT, THE CTLR SAID CONFIRM CLB TO 10000 FT AND I SAID 'SORRY I THOUGHT WE WERE CLRED TO 11000 FT, WE ARE CORRECTING BACK TO 10000 FT.' I THINK I MADE THIS MISTAKE BECAUSE DEP CTL CLRED US TO 'ONE-ZERO THOUSAND FT,' INSTEAD OF 'TEN THOUSAND FT' AND I THOUGHT I HEARD 'ONE-ONE THOUSAND FT.' THE PHRASES 'TEN' AND 'ELEVEN' ARE BETTER AND CLEARER THAN 'ONE-ZERO' OR 'ONE- ONE.'
