Narrative:

Descending into chicago we were given 4000 ft. The copilot inadvertently set 3000 ft. As we went through about 4300 ft I asked him if we had been given a new altitude. He didn't think so, but thought 3000 ft was correct. I slowed our descent as he was asking approach to confirm our altitude assignment. Approach wasn't sure either. I leveled at about 3500 ft while she was talking with the previous controller. She confirmed that we were supposed to be at 4000 ft, but then cleared us to 3000 ft.
