Narrative:
After normal departure from syr, climbing through 8000 ft the #1 engine surged, observed tq fluctuations and itt rise followed by metal on metal sound and a bang. #1 engine fire 'T-handle' illuminated. Proceeded with standard company memory actions for engine fire. (We were just handed off to ZNY.) went back to and called syr approach to inform them of our situation, declared an emergency and began a left turn back to syr. Completed the engine fire emergency checklist and briefed the flight attendant about our return to syr and to prepare for an emergency landing. Landed uneventfully on runway 10 and after inspection of the #1 engine nacelle by emergency crews we returned to the gate.
