Narrative:
During walkaround found the #1 main tire with a bald spot, tread worn and in one area no tread shown and a gash in the tread 3 inches long and 1/2 inch deep, 3 plies showing. Called maintenance. Maintenance performed a tire change. From the call to maintenance it took 1 hour 53 mins to change the tire. Agents told us that the crew was going to get the delay -- why? The tire was written up on jun/xx/96, and 4 other tires were changed between may/xx/96 and jun/xx/96, but not the #1 main. Took off at maximum weight, 149100 pounds flap 6 degree high speed, flying into ord with WX forecasted. In the essence of safety the tire needed to be changed. Called chief pilot in bos to report problem.
