Narrative:
On jun/xx/96, flight XXXX was cleared by the tower for takeoff on runway 18 at dca. Tower winds were given as 220 degrees at 29 KTS gusting 40 KTS. WX conditions on the runway were VFR. Shortly after rotation, the aircraft experienced a sudden loss of airspeed. Windshear cockpit warnings began to occur. A windshear escape maneuver was executed. Aircraft remained at low altitude in an attempt to gain flying speed. Once airspeed was recovered, the aircraft was cleaned up and a normal departure was accomplished. Aircraft was flown on an IFR flight plan to lga with no further occurrences. After landing at lga on post-flight inspection, left wingtip damage was observed. Prior to this time, there had been no indication or knowledge of any damage to the aircraft. Maintenance personnel were notified and logbook entries were made.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: WINDSHEAR ON TKOF. POST-FLT INSPECTION REVEALED WINGTIP DAMAGE. WIND CONDITIONS AT TKOF WERE EXTREME, 29 KTS GUSTS TO 40 KTS.
Narrative: ON JUN/XX/96, FLT XXXX WAS CLRED BY THE TWR FOR TKOF ON RWY 18 AT DCA. TWR WINDS WERE GIVEN AS 220 DEGS AT 29 KTS GUSTING 40 KTS. WX CONDITIONS ON THE RWY WERE VFR. SHORTLY AFTER ROTATION, THE ACFT EXPERIENCED A SUDDEN LOSS OF AIRSPD. WINDSHEAR COCKPIT WARNINGS BEGAN TO OCCUR. A WINDSHEAR ESCAPE MANEUVER WAS EXECUTED. ACFT REMAINED AT LOW ALT IN AN ATTEMPT TO GAIN FLYING SPD. ONCE AIRSPD WAS RECOVERED, THE ACFT WAS CLEANED UP AND A NORMAL DEP WAS ACCOMPLISHED. ACFT WAS FLOWN ON AN IFR FLT PLAN TO LGA WITH NO FURTHER OCCURRENCES. AFTER LNDG AT LGA ON POST-FLT INSPECTION, L WINGTIP DAMAGE WAS OBSERVED. PRIOR TO THIS TIME, THERE HAD BEEN NO INDICATION OR KNOWLEDGE OF ANY DAMAGE TO THE ACFT. MAINT PERSONNEL WERE NOTIFIED AND LOGBOOK ENTRIES WERE MADE.
