Narrative:
While turning off of the runway, the local controller gave instructions for taxi-in. I am not certain what was stated. My first officer thought that we were cleared to the gate, to stay with the tower. Approaching runway 22 off taxiway a intersection, I checked for traffic on runway 22 (active), saw none, and continued the taxi. I did not follow my own policy: if in doubt, check. After we crossed runway 22, the local controller advised us that we had crossed an active runway without a clearance. Since I do not remember what was said while we were clearing runway 27L, he could be correct. I talked to the controller afterwards. There were no traffic conflicts, luckily. We were discussing a possible routing out of mlb due to thunderstorms in the area, just prior to crossing runway. First things first. It is possible that familiarity with the airport may have caused some complacency. We have made multiple lndgs at mlb during the month at various times during the day and have received the clearance 'to taxi to the gate' and 'stay with the local controller.' supplemental information from acn 339849: when tower advised us of our taxi instructions, we were involved in the rollout and transferring control of aircraft from first officer to captain.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: AN ACR FLC TAXIED ACROSS AN ACTIVE RWY WITHOUT A CLRNC. THEY HAD RECEIVED THEIR TAXI INSTRUCTIONS DURING TRANSFER OF ACFT CTL, AFTER LNDG, BUT WERE UNSURE OF THE CLRNC.
Narrative: WHILE TURNING OFF OF THE RWY, THE LCL CTLR GAVE INSTRUCTIONS FOR TAXI-IN. I AM NOT CERTAIN WHAT WAS STATED. MY FO THOUGHT THAT WE WERE CLRED TO THE GATE, TO STAY WITH THE TWR. APCHING RWY 22 OFF TXWY A INTXN, I CHKED FOR TFC ON RWY 22 (ACTIVE), SAW NONE, AND CONTINUED THE TAXI. I DID NOT FOLLOW MY OWN POLICY: IF IN DOUBT, CHK. AFTER WE CROSSED RWY 22, THE LCL CTLR ADVISED US THAT WE HAD CROSSED AN ACTIVE RWY WITHOUT A CLRNC. SINCE I DO NOT REMEMBER WHAT WAS SAID WHILE WE WERE CLRING RWY 27L, HE COULD BE CORRECT. I TALKED TO THE CTLR AFTERWARDS. THERE WERE NO TFC CONFLICTS, LUCKILY. WE WERE DISCUSSING A POSSIBLE ROUTING OUT OF MLB DUE TO TSTMS IN THE AREA, JUST PRIOR TO XING RWY. FIRST THINGS FIRST. IT IS POSSIBLE THAT FAMILIARITY WITH THE ARPT MAY HAVE CAUSED SOME COMPLACENCY. WE HAVE MADE MULTIPLE LNDGS AT MLB DURING THE MONTH AT VARIOUS TIMES DURING THE DAY AND HAVE RECEIVED THE CLRNC 'TO TAXI TO THE GATE' AND 'STAY WITH THE LCL CTLR.' SUPPLEMENTAL INFO FROM ACN 339849: WHEN TWR ADVISED US OF OUR TAXI INSTRUCTIONS, WE WERE INVOLVED IN THE ROLLOUT AND TRANSFERRING CTL OF ACFT FROM FO TO CAPT.
