Narrative:
On a flight from slc to abq our flight plan clearance was 'slc 094 degree radial, mtu 303 degree radial, mtu, fmn, J15, taner, and curly 2 to abq.' pre departure clearance read 'slc 094 degree radial, mtu 303 degree radial, mtu, jnc, and J15 to fmn, as filed.' omega was loaded early with flight plan route and coordinates. Pre departure clearance arrived at cockpit with final paperwork just prior to pushback. Pilots misread clearance, thinking it was the same as the flight plan route. Mistake resulted in flying mtu to fmn direct using the omega, since off the airways. The aircraft was about 25-30 mi west of and abeam jnc when ZDV questioned our clearance. When the problem was detected, clearance was revised by ZDV and they said there was 'no problem.'
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: A B727 FLC DID NOT NOTICE THAT THEIR PDC WAS DIFFERENT FROM THEIR FLT PLAN RTE. INSTEAD OF FLYING THE ASSIGNED AIRWAY, THEY HAD BEGUN A DIRECT RTE BTWN NAVAIDS WHEN THE CTLR INTERVENED.
Narrative: ON A FLT FROM SLC TO ABQ OUR FLT PLAN CLRNC WAS 'SLC 094 DEG RADIAL, MTU 303 DEG RADIAL, MTU, FMN, J15, TANER, AND CURLY 2 TO ABQ.' PDC READ 'SLC 094 DEG RADIAL, MTU 303 DEG RADIAL, MTU, JNC, AND J15 TO FMN, AS FILED.' OMEGA WAS LOADED EARLY WITH FLT PLAN RTE AND COORDINATES. PDC ARRIVED AT COCKPIT WITH FINAL PAPERWORK JUST PRIOR TO PUSHBACK. PLTS MISREAD CLRNC, THINKING IT WAS THE SAME AS THE FLT PLAN RTE. MISTAKE RESULTED IN FLYING MTU TO FMN DIRECT USING THE OMEGA, SINCE OFF THE AIRWAYS. THE ACFT WAS ABOUT 25-30 MI W OF AND ABEAM JNC WHEN ZDV QUESTIONED OUR CLRNC. WHEN THE PROB WAS DETECTED, CLRNC WAS REVISED BY ZDV AND THEY SAID THERE WAS 'NO PROB.'
