Narrative:
This was a scheduled flight from sfo to fat. Everything was normal. I (the captain) was the flying pilot and I had the autopilot engaged. I initiated the descent with the autopilot upon being cleared to FL150 from FL170. We were late cleared to FL130. We were both reviewing charts and the approach when the controller called attention to our altitude which was FL120 and descending. We immediately returned to FL130. The contributing factor was not monitoring the autopilot by the crew. Supplemental information from acn 340966: the autopilot failed to capture the pre- set altitude. I read back the 13000 ft response to ATC, and noted that the captain set the altimeter alerter to 13000 feet. I then communicated to the captain that I was off number '1' communication and listening to the fresno ATIS and copying the information down when the deviation occured.
