Narrative:
While taxiing into gate xx in ams we followed the docking system into the parking spot. In the process the left wing and #2 cowling sustained damage from the jetway. The copilot and I discussed the system and thought the yellow lead-in lights were on and taxied until the stop light appeared. Supplemental information from acn 341295: captain taxied very slowly to the gate, where we both decided the docking system was turned on. We found out later it wasn't, but the glare from the windows behind the docking system in the morning sun made it appear to be working.
