Narrative:

While being vectored for route, monitoring radar for thunderstorms and reading route map, I failed to note that the first officer climbed above the assigned altitude of 17000 ft. The B727 block iv autoplt does not have an automatic leveloff feature. This was a time of high workload and frequency changes. The controller initially told us to maintain 17000 ft when we climbed above, but then immediately changed this to FL180. Since traffic was not a factor, loss of separation did not occur. No other communications or actions were taken following the event.
