Narrative:
ASOS was transmitting visibility as 1 1/4 SM during a thunderstorm when it was actually greater than 10 SM. This caused us to call the WX IFR when it was actually VFR. ASOS is unrealistic and unsafe. ASOS should be removed from ATC.

Title: RPTR STATED THE ASOS RPTED INACCURATE VISIBILITY OF ONE AND ONE QUARTER SM WHEN IT WAS ACTUALLY 10 SM. THIS CAUSED THE ARPT TO BE RPTED AS IFR.
Narrative: ASOS WAS XMITTING VISIBILITY AS 1 1/4 SM DURING A TSTM WHEN IT WAS ACTUALLY GREATER THAN 10 SM. THIS CAUSED US TO CALL THE WX IFR WHEN IT WAS ACTUALLY VFR. ASOS IS UNREALISTIC AND UNSAFE. ASOS SHOULD BE REMOVED FROM ATC.
