Narrative:
Flying polar STAR to dtw, previous controller had difficulty receiving our xmissions over mkg. While in a descent to 12000 ft MSL from 22000 ft we inadvertently descended slightly below 12000 ft while trying to understand a clearance to keep present airspeed instead of slowing to 250 KTS as previously cleared. No conflict was incurred and we immediately returned to 12000 ft within 10 seconds. No problems were noted with ZOB.

Title: MLG OVERSHOT 12000 FT WHILE DSNDING.
Narrative: FLYING POLAR STAR TO DTW, PREVIOUS CTLR HAD DIFFICULTY RECEIVING OUR XMISSIONS OVER MKG. WHILE IN A DSCNT TO 12000 FT MSL FROM 22000 FT WE INADVERTENTLY DSNDED SLIGHTLY BELOW 12000 FT WHILE TRYING TO UNDERSTAND A CLRNC TO KEEP PRESENT AIRSPD INSTEAD OF SLOWING TO 250 KTS AS PREVIOUSLY CLRED. NO CONFLICT WAS INCURRED AND WE IMMEDIATELY RETURNED TO 12000 FT WITHIN 10 SECONDS. NO PROBS WERE NOTED WITH ZOB.
