Narrative:
Flight was a ferry flight from ord to msp (no passenger, no flight attendants). Upon landing at msp a galley service cart cracked through the cockpit door, damaging it. No one was injured. The cart apparently came from the aft galley, all the way up the aisle while en route. The aircraft had come from the hangar in ord, and apparently had been catered for an earlier flight. A full compliment of carts were loaded in the aft galley. Either this cart had not been latched in position and/or the brakes on the cart had not been set, or failed. I have since heard of occurrences where this same thing has happened on passenger flts with other airlines. This is probably a good thing for a pilot to check on a ferry flight, where there are no flight attendants on board, as this is usually their duty to double check. Supplemental information from acn 344421: a galley service cart hit the cockpit door, breaking it off of its hinges. Supplemental information from can 343598: also the brake on the carts wheels was not set.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: AN UNATTENDED GALLEY CART ON A B727 FERRY FLT ROLLS DOWN AISLE ON LNDG AND BREAKS COCKPIT DOOR.
Narrative: FLT WAS A FERRY FLT FROM ORD TO MSP (NO PAX, NO FLT ATTENDANTS). UPON LNDG AT MSP A GALLEY SVC CART CRACKED THROUGH THE COCKPIT DOOR, DAMAGING IT. NO ONE WAS INJURED. THE CART APPARENTLY CAME FROM THE AFT GALLEY, ALL THE WAY UP THE AISLE WHILE ENRTE. THE ACFT HAD COME FROM THE HANGAR IN ORD, AND APPARENTLY HAD BEEN CATERED FOR AN EARLIER FLT. A FULL COMPLIMENT OF CARTS WERE LOADED IN THE AFT GALLEY. EITHER THIS CART HAD NOT BEEN LATCHED IN POS AND/OR THE BRAKES ON THE CART HAD NOT BEEN SET, OR FAILED. I HAVE SINCE HEARD OF OCCURRENCES WHERE THIS SAME THING HAS HAPPENED ON PAX FLTS WITH OTHER AIRLINES. THIS IS PROBABLY A GOOD THING FOR A PLT TO CHK ON A FERRY FLT, WHERE THERE ARE NO FLT ATTENDANTS ON BOARD, AS THIS IS USUALLY THEIR DUTY TO DOUBLE CHK. SUPPLEMENTAL INFO FROM ACN 344421: A GALLEY SVC CART HIT THE COCKPIT DOOR, BREAKING IT OFF OF ITS HINGES. SUPPLEMENTAL INFO FROM CAN 343598: ALSO THE BRAKE ON THE CARTS WHEELS WAS NOT SET.
