Narrative:

Cleared out of FL410 to FL330. As throttles went to idle, #2 engine N2 indicated in amber band on vibration indicator. It did cause vibration to decrease back to white band but then increased back to amber band to 5.0. Vibration could be felt in airframe, rudder pedals it could be heard. Refereed to engine vibration B757 abnormal procedure which led us to engine fire/damage/shutdown checklist. We declared an emergency and asked for clearance to iad, ran engine fire/damage/shutdown procedure, one engine approach and go around procedure and emergency landing procedure. We briefed #1 flight attendant on possible ground evacuate/evacuation. PA was made to passenger informing them of unscheduled landing at iad. Ran before landing checklist and made single engine landing on runway 12 at iad. Due to time constraints accomplishing required checklists we did not notify company of diversion until on ground at iad.

Title: B757 ENG SHUT DOWN DUE TO HIGH VIBRATION. ACFT FLC EQUIP PROB.

Narrative: CLRED OUT OF FL410 TO FL330. AS THROTTLES WENT TO IDLE, #2 ENG N2 INDICATED IN AMBER BAND ON VIBRATION INDICATOR. IT DID CAUSE VIBRATION TO DECREASE BACK TO WHITE BAND BUT THEN INCREASED BACK TO AMBER BAND TO 5.0. VIBRATION COULD BE FELT IN AIRFRAME, RUDDER PEDALS IT COULD BE HEARD. REFEREED TO ENG VIBRATION B757 ABNORMAL PROC WHICH LED US TO ENG FIRE/DAMAGE/SHUTDOWN CHKLIST. WE DECLARED AN EMER AND ASKED FOR CLRNC TO IAD, RAN ENG FIRE/DAMAGE/SHUTDOWN PROC, ONE ENG APCH AND GAR PROC AND EMER LNDG PROC. WE BRIEFED #1 FLT ATTENDANT ON POSSIBLE GND EVAC. PA WAS MADE TO PAX INFORMING THEM OF UNSCHEDULED LNDG AT IAD. RAN BEFORE LNDG CHKLIST AND MADE SINGLE ENG LNDG ON RWY 12 AT IAD. DUE TO TIME CONSTRAINTS ACCOMPLISHING REQUIRED CHKLISTS WE DID NOT NOTIFY COMPANY OF DIVERSION UNTIL ON GND AT IAD.
