Narrative:

During climb from den en route to iad, we were cleared to climb and maintain FL230. Approximately between 14000 ft and 15000 ft ATC (departure control) cleared us to maintain 16000 ft and to deviate east around WX as required. The first officer set 16000 ft on MCP and I acknowledged 16000 ft. I was flying and both of us turned our attention to WX radar. I overshot 16000 ft to 16500 ft, we got an altitude alert and then returned to 16000 ft. A high rate of climb with the need to detour WX and hand-flying combined to cause this deviation. A better utilization of the autoplt and autoflt equipment would have prevented this incident.
