Narrative:
On taxi into the parking gate we felt a bump and I stopped the aircraft. Apparently the green-yellow-red stop light was on but we failed to see it was red or it was green and did not notice it was changed to red. The ground man controling the light was in position. It is possible I saw the ground man and assumed the light was green when it was actually red. It was the first time I had parked at these international gates at ord. I was not aware the parking stop position was further out than most gates. The left engine contacted the jet bridge and I looked at the copilot then the parking light and saw that it was red. At that point I had been flying 6 days in a row. It is possible I was tired and the red color did not register with me. Maintenance said the damage was to the nose cowl or the left engine. Supplemental information from acn 344628: I cleared both sides of the aircraft to ensure no obstacles existed in the gate area. I saw a ground person standing under the jetbridge holding a cord. I did not notice the color of the light system as it is blocked from view by the aircraft center window bar.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: B767 TAXIING INTO GATE, FAILED TO NOTE RED STOP LIGHT ON. GND MAN WAS IN POS BUT RPTR FAILED TO MONITOR THE LIGHT. FIRST TIME PARKING AT THESE GATES. L ENG STRUCK THE JETWAY CAUSING DAMAGE TO NOSE COWL AND POSSIBLY THE ENG.
Narrative: ON TAXI INTO THE PARKING GATE WE FELT A BUMP AND I STOPPED THE ACFT. APPARENTLY THE GREEN-YELLOW-RED STOP LIGHT WAS ON BUT WE FAILED TO SEE IT WAS RED OR IT WAS GREEN AND DID NOT NOTICE IT WAS CHANGED TO RED. THE GND MAN CTLING THE LIGHT WAS IN POS. IT IS POSSIBLE I SAW THE GND MAN AND ASSUMED THE LIGHT WAS GREEN WHEN IT WAS ACTUALLY RED. IT WAS THE FIRST TIME I HAD PARKED AT THESE INTL GATES AT ORD. I WAS NOT AWARE THE PARKING STOP POS WAS FURTHER OUT THAN MOST GATES. THE L ENG CONTACTED THE JET BRIDGE AND I LOOKED AT THE COPLT THEN THE PARKING LIGHT AND SAW THAT IT WAS RED. AT THAT POINT I HAD BEEN FLYING 6 DAYS IN A ROW. IT IS POSSIBLE I WAS TIRED AND THE RED COLOR DID NOT REGISTER WITH ME. MAINT SAID THE DAMAGE WAS TO THE NOSE COWL OR THE L ENG. SUPPLEMENTAL INFO FROM ACN 344628: I CLRED BOTH SIDES OF THE ACFT TO ENSURE NO OBSTACLES EXISTED IN THE GATE AREA. I SAW A GND PERSON STANDING UNDER THE JETBRIDGE HOLDING A CORD. I DID NOT NOTICE THE COLOR OF THE LIGHT SYS AS IT IS BLOCKED FROM VIEW BY THE ACFT CTR WINDOW BAR.
