Narrative:
Location: 15 DME north of fak on minks 1 arrival. After crossing ott with omega coupled to autoplt, aircraft turned right as required. However, aircraft turned too far right and did not correct back to the left to get on course. Crew noticed that the omega had started to drift at about 13 DME north ott and initiated turn back on course. At that time, ZDC called and asked where we were showing ourselves in relation to the arrival. We told him that our omegas had drifted a little, and that we were correcting back to the left. We estimate that we were no more than 5 mi right of centerline. Before we had a chance to discuss the incident further with center, his frequency became garbled, and we had to find the next frequency on our own. Therefore, we had no way of telling whether or not we had created a conflict with other traffic. We established ourselves on the centerline of the arrival course within 1 min of noticing the discrepancy. At the time of the omega drift, VLF 3 and 5 were both deselected. Remainder of arrival was uneventful.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: B727 ON MINKS 1 STAR LGA. USING OMEGA FOR NAV. OVER OTT ACFT TURNED R PER ROUTING BUT OMEGA FAILED TO INTERCEPT COURSE. CTLR RPTED ACFT OFF COURSE AND TO CORRECT. FLC ESTIMATES 4 MI R OF COURSE AND ACCOUNT GARBLED COM DO NOT KNOW IF CONFLICT OCCURRED.
Narrative: LOCATION: 15 DME N OF FAK ON MINKS 1 ARR. AFTER XING OTT WITH OMEGA COUPLED TO AUTOPLT, ACFT TURNED R AS REQUIRED. HOWEVER, ACFT TURNED TOO FAR R AND DID NOT CORRECT BACK TO THE L TO GET ON COURSE. CREW NOTICED THAT THE OMEGA HAD STARTED TO DRIFT AT ABOUT 13 DME N OTT AND INITIATED TURN BACK ON COURSE. AT THAT TIME, ZDC CALLED AND ASKED WHERE WE WERE SHOWING OURSELVES IN RELATION TO THE ARR. WE TOLD HIM THAT OUR OMEGAS HAD DRIFTED A LITTLE, AND THAT WE WERE CORRECTING BACK TO THE L. WE ESTIMATE THAT WE WERE NO MORE THAN 5 MI R OF CTRLINE. BEFORE WE HAD A CHANCE TO DISCUSS THE INCIDENT FURTHER WITH CTR, HIS FREQ BECAME GARBLED, AND WE HAD TO FIND THE NEXT FREQ ON OUR OWN. THEREFORE, WE HAD NO WAY OF TELLING WHETHER OR NOT WE HAD CREATED A CONFLICT WITH OTHER TFC. WE ESTABLISHED OURSELVES ON THE CTRLINE OF THE ARR COURSE WITHIN 1 MIN OF NOTICING THE DISCREPANCY. AT THE TIME OF THE OMEGA DRIFT, VLF 3 AND 5 WERE BOTH DESELECTED. REMAINDER OF ARR WAS UNEVENTFUL.
