Narrative:
Received a change in our routing from ATC upon request of our clearance at msp, due to WX. It was as follows: radar vectors fsd, J-114 onl, J-148 oal, direct hyp sjc. Northeast of onl we were given direct oal by ATC and we accepted. Approximately 100 mi east of oal, we understood ATC to say, 'we were cleared to sjc via direct oal, el nido, el nido 3 FL350. We took this to mean we were to proceed direct to el nido VOR from oal VOR. It was read back to ATC as such, 'clre D direct oal, el nido, el nido 3 arrival, FL350. It was inserted into the FMC. Shortly after passing oal, ZOA asked if we were on the oal transition. I told ATC we understood the clearance to be direct to el nido without the transition. ATC told us to turn 15 degrees left and to intercept the oal 216 degree radial, which we did and intercepted the radial shortly thereafter. We continued on the el nido 3 to sjc via the oal transition.

Title: FLC OF AN MLG FAILED TO FOLLOW THEIR CLRNC AT THE BEGINNING OF A STAR CAUSING ATC TO INTERVENE AND PROVIDE A VECTOR TO ON COURSE. THE CREW HAD MISINTERPRETED THEIR CLRNC AND CONSEQUENTLY PROGRAMMED THEIR FMC IN ERROR.
Narrative: RECEIVED A CHANGE IN OUR ROUTING FROM ATC UPON REQUEST OF OUR CLRNC AT MSP, DUE TO WX. IT WAS AS FOLLOWS: RADAR VECTORS FSD, J-114 ONL, J-148 OAL, DIRECT HYP SJC. NE OF ONL WE WERE GIVEN DIRECT OAL BY ATC AND WE ACCEPTED. APPROX 100 MI E OF OAL, WE UNDERSTOOD ATC TO SAY, 'WE WERE CLRED TO SJC VIA DIRECT OAL, EL NIDO, EL NIDO 3 FL350. WE TOOK THIS TO MEAN WE WERE TO PROCEED DIRECT TO EL NIDO VOR FROM OAL VOR. IT WAS READ BACK TO ATC AS SUCH, 'CLRE D DIRECT OAL, EL NIDO, EL NIDO 3 ARR, FL350. IT WAS INSERTED INTO THE FMC. SHORTLY AFTER PASSING OAL, ZOA ASKED IF WE WERE ON THE OAL TRANSITION. I TOLD ATC WE UNDERSTOOD THE CLRNC TO BE DIRECT TO EL NIDO WITHOUT THE TRANSITION. ATC TOLD US TO TURN 15 DEGS L AND TO INTERCEPT THE OAL 216 DEG RADIAL, WHICH WE DID AND INTERCEPTED THE RADIAL SHORTLY THEREAFTER. WE CONTINUED ON THE EL NIDO 3 TO SJC VIA THE OAL TRANSITION.
