Cleared to descend from 11000 ft to 8000 ft. Received a turn to base leg and descended through altitude to 7600 ft. Subsequently cleared for visual. Down drafts in area were contributing factors in event. Returned to cleared altitude immediately.

Narrative: CLRED TO DSND FROM 11000 FT TO 8000 FT. RECEIVED A TURN TO BASE LEG AND DSNDED THROUGH ALT TO 7600 FT. SUBSEQUENTLY CLRED FOR VISUAL. DOWN DRAFTS IN AREA WERE CONTRIBUTING FACTORS IN EVENT. RETURNED TO CLRED ALT IMMEDIATELY.
