Narrative:

I departed VFR with my student from vkx en route to accomack airport in melfa, va. We contacted patuxent approach control and requested to transition their airspace. Our request was approved as long as we stayed clear of class D. While navigating around clouds to maintain VFR cloud clearance distances, we accidentally entered the class D. When it did not appear that we would be able to maintain VFR much longer, I called ATC and requested an IFR clearance. Upon receiving a squawk and radar identify, we were informed that we had entered class D. We were at 4.8 DME from pxt VOR. We immediately turned north to exit the airspace. We picked up the IFR clearance and continued to our destination without incident.
