Narrative:
Gander tower gave our clearance as: gander 4 departure, direct 50N/50W. Gander and departure says climb to 5000 ft, runway heading or as assigned. We understood our clearance allows us to turn direct to 50N/50W while maintaining 5000 ft. After takeoff, I called gander departure, while starting a 180 degree turn toward 50N/50W. The controller informed me that I should not have started turning until he had cleared us. I have flown through gander many, many times through the yrs and being cleared on course immediately after takeoff has been a common clearance. The terminology used by tower in our takeoff clearance was not standard, by united states standards, no heading was given, only a cleared to 50N/50W. The WX was good and there was no other traffic in the area so no conflicts occurred. In the future, I will confirm that we are actually cleared on course when tower gives me that clearance.

Title: FLC OF A LOCKHEED 1011 STARTED TURN AFTER TKOF PRIOR TO REACHING THEIR AFTER TKOF ALT CLRNC DUE TO A MISUNDERSTANDING OF THEIR CLRNC. TRACK HDG DEV.
Narrative: GANDER TWR GAVE OUR CLRNC AS: GANDER 4 DEP, DIRECT 50N/50W. GANDER AND DEP SAYS CLB TO 5000 FT, RWY HDG OR AS ASSIGNED. WE UNDERSTOOD OUR CLRNC ALLOWS US TO TURN DIRECT TO 50N/50W WHILE MAINTAINING 5000 FT. AFTER TKOF, I CALLED GANDER DEP, WHILE STARTING A 180 DEG TURN TOWARD 50N/50W. THE CTLR INFORMED ME THAT I SHOULD NOT HAVE STARTED TURNING UNTIL HE HAD CLRED US. I HAVE FLOWN THROUGH GANDER MANY, MANY TIMES THROUGH THE YRS AND BEING CLRED ON COURSE IMMEDIATELY AFTER TKOF HAS BEEN A COMMON CLRNC. THE TERMINOLOGY USED BY TWR IN OUR TKOF CLRNC WAS NOT STANDARD, BY UNITED STATES STANDARDS, NO HEADING WAS GIVEN, ONLY A CLRED TO 50N/50W. THE WX WAS GOOD AND THERE WAS NO OTHER TFC IN THE AREA SO NO CONFLICTS OCCURRED. IN THE FUTURE, I WILL CONFIRM THAT WE ARE ACTUALLY CLRED ON COURSE WHEN TWR GIVES ME THAT CLRNC.
