Narrative:
Climbing to FL190, we called miami to request 17000 ft. Frequency was busy and first officer finally requested and received a new clearance to maintain 17000 ft. I was looking up the goofy arrival to mco and did not get the altitude pre-select set (reset) to 17000 ft from 19000 ft. First officer did not verify altitude and, at 17500 ft, I started to level off to return to 17000 ft. Mia ATC inquired about our altitude and we returned to 17000 ft. What caused the problem was a lack of backing each other up on altitude calls. CRM was lacking at the time.
