Narrative:
ATC previously cleared us pilot's discretion to descend to FL240, then subsequently canceled clearance saying 'maintain FL350.' FL350 was reset in the altitude window. When profile hook said start descent, I started down in vertical speed and the captain called departing FL350 for FL240 and the controller immediately told us to maintain FL350. Recognizing my mistake, I changed the FL345 and the controller said no more about it. We were in radar contact and had no traffic on TCASII within 10 mi. Night VMC.

Title: AN ACR A300 CREW DEPARTED ITS FLT LEVEL WITHOUT CLRNC. ERROR ADMITTED. AMENDED CLRNC ALT ASSIGNMENT.
Narrative: ATC PREVIOUSLY CLRED US PLT'S DISCRETION TO DSND TO FL240, THEN SUBSEQUENTLY CANCELED CLRNC SAYING 'MAINTAIN FL350.' FL350 WAS RESET IN THE ALT WINDOW. WHEN PROFILE HOOK SAID START DSCNT, I STARTED DOWN IN VERT SPD AND THE CAPT CALLED DEPARTING FL350 FOR FL240 AND THE CTLR IMMEDIATELY TOLD US TO MAINTAIN FL350. RECOGNIZING MY MISTAKE, I CHANGED THE FL345 AND THE CTLR SAID NO MORE ABOUT IT. WE WERE IN RADAR CONTACT AND HAD NO TFC ON TCASII WITHIN 10 MI. NIGHT VMC.
