Narrative:
We were cleared to FL180 by ZMA. The first officer was flying and it was his first leg on the first day of a 3 day trip. At 17000 ft I called '17000 ft for 18000 ft.' he acknowledged. At 17600 ft I mentioned we were cleared to 18000 ft because he was climbing at a high rate. At 17900 ft he was pushing the yoke to level off, but went through 18300 ft before he got down to 18000 ft. There were no conflicts and no comments by ATC. The best remedy for this problem is to use a rate of climb or descent of 1000-1500 FPM when within 1000 ft of the assigned altitude, which he did the rest of the time.

THE BEST REMEDY FOR THIS PROB IS TO USE A RATE OF CLB OR DSCNT OF 1000-1500 FPM WHEN WITHIN 1000 FT OF THE ASSIGNED ALT, WHICH HE DID THE REST OF THE TIME.
