Narrative:
Departing lax on laax 1 SID. Missed turn to 220 degree heading after crossing smo 160 degree radial. Distraction due to flying with a first officer that was new to me, combined with light aircraft/high rate of climb and a 2000 ft leveloff altitude. I should have been backing up the first officer on the departure as well as monitoring the leveloff.
