Narrative:
After gear retraction on takeoff, cockpit indications could not confirm the position of the left main gear. I cycled the gear several times while performing the appropriate checklists. There was no change. After consulting with flight control, I decided to return to hnl. Due to the uncertain position of the left main landing gear, I asked for the equipment to be standing by. After performing a low pass so that the tower could assist in visually determining the position of the gear, a normal approach and landing was made. After landing, a failed bungee (downlock release) actuator was found to be the failed gear component.
