Narrative:

Pilot departed under special VFR clearance from ground control. After takeoff through IFR layer, pilot broke out into VFR conditions at approximately 1400 ft. Cruised without incident VFR to ogb. Ogb unicom advised airport was IFR and advised not to land. I contacted cae departure, requested special VFR to return to cae. I was advised to divert to chs where VFR conditions existed. I diverted and was handed off to shaw controller. I was advised that mni had possible VFR conditions. I diverted to mni and landed safely with no problems. The incident emphasized to me the importance of not taking off unless I am sure I can land at my destination. I should have called ogb and got the conditions. I will be much more cautious in my request for special VFR. The controllers did a super job assisting me which was very reassuring and comforting.

Narrative: PLT DEPARTED UNDER SPECIAL VFR CLRNC FROM GND CTL. AFTER TKOF THROUGH IFR LAYER, PLT BROKE OUT INTO VFR CONDITIONS AT APPROX 1400 FT. CRUISED WITHOUT INCIDENT VFR TO OGB. OGB UNICOM ADVISED ARPT WAS IFR AND ADVISED NOT TO LAND. I CONTACTED CAE DEP, REQUESTED SPECIAL VFR TO RETURN TO CAE. I WAS ADVISED TO DIVERT TO CHS WHERE VFR CONDITIONS EXISTED. I DIVERTED AND WAS HANDED OFF TO SHAW CTLR. I WAS ADVISED THAT MNI HAD POSSIBLE VFR CONDITIONS. I DIVERTED TO MNI AND LANDED SAFELY WITH NO PROBS. THE INCIDENT EMPHASIZED TO ME THE IMPORTANCE OF NOT TAKING OFF UNLESS I AM SURE I CAN LAND AT MY DEST. I SHOULD HAVE CALLED OGB AND GOT THE CONDITIONS. I WILL BE MUCH MORE CAUTIOUS IN MY REQUEST FOR SPECIAL VFR. THE CTLRS DID A SUPER JOB ASSISTING ME WHICH WAS VERY REASSURING AND COMFORTING.
