Narrative:
First officer, flying aircraft on automatic FMS departure, failed to engage navigation function for departure and missed turn at one and one half mi. Departure stated we overshot turn by 2 mi. Captain was working radios and missed error. The basic problem is heavy workload on 2-MAN crew on FMS type glass cockpit aircraft. Crew must take extra care to back up all operations.
