Narrative:
Encountered moderate turbulence at FL390. Autoflt having difficulty with turbulence. I took airplane and disconnected autoplt and autothrottles. Started manual descent to FL310. In mid descent I returned aircraft to copilot (his leg to fly) and reconnected autoplt. Aircraft leveled at FL310 on autoplt with throttles at idle. I turned in my seat to answer some operational questions from flight attendant who had come into cockpit, plus I had a manual on my lap and was troubleshooting a minor system problem. Stick shaker went off, I turned around, recognized impending stall (airspeed at 150 KTS) and executed stall recovery maneuver. We lost 200-300 ft during recovery.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: LGT ACFT ENCOUNTERING TURB. CAPT RPTR TOOK OVER FLYING FROM THE FLYING FO. CAPT DISCONNECTED BOTH AUTOPLT AND AUTOTHROTTLES, DSNDED TO 31000 FT, RECONNECTED AUTOPLT, ACFT LEVELED AND CAPT GAVE THE FLYING BACK TO FO. FO WAS NOT AWARE THAT THE AUTOTHROTTLES WERE STILL DISCONNECTED UNTIL STICK SHAKER WENT OFF INDICATING APCH TO A STALL. BOTH FLC WERE DISTRACTED WITH OTHER THINGS AT THE TIME.
