Narrative:
Vectored for long final by lax approach. Told to intercept localizer runway 24R at 2500 ft. Intercepted at about 25 DME of runway 24R localizer. Level flight, 160 KIAS assigned, flaps 1 degree. Got GPWS 'pull up, terrain, terrain' message at about 22 DME lax runway 24R localizer. Escape maneuver accomplished. No conflict, but scared passenger and me. Concern: lax approach frequently vectors runway 25 traffic overhead at 3500 ft. Note: GPWS real, caused by 1388 ft terrain depicted on chart, rapidly rising. Callback conversation with reporter revealed the following information: the reporter has talked to lax TRACON about this situation. The MVA on the runway 24R localizer at denay is 2500 ft. Apparently lax TRACON is willing to have aircraft respond to an occasional GPWS warning and have this altitude available for vectoring. The reporter states that the terrain rises very rapidly when approaching the hill from the northeast. It rises very slowly when approaching it from the southwest. The reporter believes that there would be no warning approaching the hill at 2500 ft from the southwest. The reporter climbed only 400 ft in response to the warning. He submitted a report to his air carrier also, and has heard nothing from the FAA or his air carrier.

Title: AN ACR B737-300 CAPT CLBED IN RESPONSE TO A GPWS WARNING. NIGHT OP. WX FACTORS LOW CEILING AND VISIBILITY. EVASIVE ACTION CLB.
Narrative: VECTORED FOR LONG FINAL BY LAX APCH. TOLD TO INTERCEPT LOC RWY 24R AT 2500 FT. INTERCEPTED AT ABOUT 25 DME OF RWY 24R LOC. LEVEL FLT, 160 KIAS ASSIGNED, FLAPS 1 DEG. GOT GPWS 'PULL UP, TERRAIN, TERRAIN' MESSAGE AT ABOUT 22 DME LAX RWY 24R LOC. ESCAPE MANEUVER ACCOMPLISHED. NO CONFLICT, BUT SCARED PAX AND ME. CONCERN: LAX APCH FREQUENTLY VECTORS RWY 25 TFC OVERHEAD AT 3500 FT. NOTE: GPWS REAL, CAUSED BY 1388 FT TERRAIN DEPICTED ON CHART, RAPIDLY RISING. CALLBACK CONVERSATION WITH RPTR REVEALED THE FOLLOWING INFO: THE RPTR HAS TALKED TO LAX TRACON ABOUT THIS SIT. THE MVA ON THE RWY 24R LOC AT DENAY IS 2500 FT. APPARENTLY LAX TRACON IS WILLING TO HAVE ACFT RESPOND TO AN OCCASIONAL GPWS WARNING AND HAVE THIS ALT AVAILABLE FOR VECTORING. THE RPTR STATES THAT THE TERRAIN RISES VERY RAPIDLY WHEN APCHING THE HILL FROM THE NE. IT RISES VERY SLOWLY WHEN APCHING IT FROM THE SW. THE RPTR BELIEVES THAT THERE WOULD BE NO WARNING APCHING THE HILL AT 2500 FT FROM THE SW. THE RPTR CLBED ONLY 400 FT IN RESPONSE TO THE WARNING. HE SUBMITTED A RPT TO HIS ACR ALSO, AND HAS HEARD NOTHING FROM THE FAA OR HIS ACR.
