Narrative:

I departed a private airstrip in PA heading for lincoln park, nj. On arriving in the area I was unable to locate the airport. The aircraft is certified for day VFR only and my pilot certificate is restr to day VFR only. I diverted to essex county airport. At this time I was unable to change radio frequency due to the rapidly darkening conditions. Because of this, I decided to squawk 7600 on the transponder and circle the field, watching for the green light from the tower. When I received this I landed on the closest runway. I touched down hard and the landing gear collapsed. I believe I made the correct actions. Under the same conditions would not hesitate to do the same.
