Narrative:
Climbing out of salt lake, we were given 16000 ft as our leveloff altitude. I guess I forgot that the captain was hand flying the plane and because of various distrs, we flew through the altitude and peaked out about 16400 ft when the altitude warning came on. To prevent something like this happening again, I would suggest using the autoplt at all times when there is a possibility of being distraction.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: CAPT OF A B757 OVERSHOT CLB ALT DUE TO A DISTR WHILE HAND FLYING THE ACFT. THE ALT ALERTER WARNED THE CREW OF THEIR ERROR. FO BELIEVES THAT THIS WOULD NOT HAVE HAPPENED IF THE AUTOPLT WOULD HAVE BEEN USED.
