Narrative:

#1 engine precautionary shutdown, FL390 inbound to stl. Performed engine failure procedures, called dispatch via commercial radio advising them of situation and decision to continue on to stl. Discussed with first officer and flight engineer that there was no need to declare an emergency. Normal descent and landing. After parked at gate, looked up in company flight operations publication section covering abnormals and realized I was to have advise ATC engine shut down even though we were not declaring an emergency. Possible contributing factor in not thinking of importance of notifying ATC is, after shutdown checklist and talking to jfk dispatch, we were well into our descent on the arrival route. No passenger on board. Hindsight -- review the flight operations publication prior to landing, be sure all procedures complied with.
