Narrative:

MD80 was placarded by maintenance. 'No cargo forward compartment.' a cargo liner had come loose from the cargo bulkhead. First officer preflight, all 3 cargo doors were open, no baggage was as yet loaded. All 3 cargo bays were empty. Preflight was complete, cockpit duties complete. We departed dfw for norfolk, va. En route, dispatch notified the cockpit that the dispatch was told by load control that the forward cargo compartment was mistakenly loaded with cargo. I told dispatch that I would land at bhm and have the cargo moved. No emergency was declared and flight proceeded to bhm and then to norfolk with no problems.
