Narrative:
Gorman 1 departure off runway 24L at lax, clearance to 3000 ft, amended to 9000 ft after takeoff. Given 2 heading changes during climb to intercept gmn radial. Pms and autothrottles were inoperative due to engine intermix. Crew was distraction by inoperative system requiring manual manipulations and frequency change, and climbed through 9000 ft to 9500 ft. Copilot noted deviation and as I leveled aircraft, departure control cleared us to maintain 10000 ft, adding a new heading and vector. We leveled at 10000 ft and proceeded on course. By procedure, we called 2000 ft to go and 1000 ft to go during altitude changes, but due to workload, inoperative system, and communications, callouts were deleted which were contributing factors. Supplemental information from acn 353130: in retrospect, I should have been more proactive as extra crew member.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: B747-400 FLC ALTDEV ALT OVERSHOT IN CLB. A MANUAL FLOWN ACFT THAT IS NORMALLY A FULLY FMS ACFT.
Narrative: GORMAN 1 DEP OFF RWY 24L AT LAX, CLRNC TO 3000 FT, AMENDED TO 9000 FT AFTER TKOF. GIVEN 2 HDG CHANGES DURING CLB TO INTERCEPT GMN RADIAL. PMS AND AUTOTHROTTLES WERE INOP DUE TO ENG INTERMIX. CREW WAS DISTR BY INOP SYS REQUIRING MANUAL MANIPULATIONS AND FREQ CHANGE, AND CLBED THROUGH 9000 FT TO 9500 FT. COPLT NOTED DEV AND AS I LEVELED ACFT, DEP CTL CLRED US TO MAINTAIN 10000 FT, ADDING A NEW HDG AND VECTOR. WE LEVELED AT 10000 FT AND PROCEEDED ON COURSE. BY PROC, WE CALLED 2000 FT TO GO AND 1000 FT TO GO DURING ALT CHANGES, BUT DUE TO WORKLOAD, INOP SYS, AND COMS, CALLOUTS WERE DELETED WHICH WERE CONTRIBUTING FACTORS. SUPPLEMENTAL INFO FROM ACN 353130: IN RETROSPECT, I SHOULD HAVE BEEN MORE PROACTIVE AS EXTRA CREW MEMBER.
