Narrative:
This report does not describe a particular event, but rather an on going problem. I'm a controller at des moines, ia, tower and recently started flying. I've come across a very serious problem that the FAA has failed to address in a timely manner. The problem is, when flying out of Y42 north of dsm another airport 'ikv' sits approximately 2 mi south of Y42 with nearly an identical runway confign, and both airports use a different unicom frequency. Both airports have fair amount of student, charter, and freight traffic. Like myself when an aircraft departs Y42 runway 17, you're looking straight down the final for runway 18 at ikv. If someone should happen to fly a wide pattern or stretch their final at ikv and have a fully loaded aircraft depart Y42 you're looking at the potential for a near or midair. The FAA needs to get these closely located airports on the same frequency.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: CTLR AT DSM WHO JUST STARTED FLYING, IS CONCERNED ABOUT THE PROX OF A PVT ARPT (Y42) AND ANOTHER ARPT (IKV) AND THE UNICOM FREQS IN USE. SAYS TFC PATTERNS COULD OVERLAP AND THINKS THIS IS A SERIOUS SIT.
Narrative: THIS RPT DOES NOT DESCRIBE A PARTICULAR EVENT, BUT RATHER AN ON GOING PROB. I'M A CTLR AT DES MOINES, IA, TWR AND RECENTLY STARTED FLYING. I'VE COME ACROSS A VERY SERIOUS PROB THAT THE FAA HAS FAILED TO ADDRESS IN A TIMELY MANNER. THE PROB IS, WHEN FLYING OUT OF Y42 N OF DSM ANOTHER ARPT 'IKV' SITS APPROX 2 MI S OF Y42 WITH NEARLY AN IDENTICAL RWY CONFIGN, AND BOTH ARPTS USE A DIFFERENT UNICOM FREQ. BOTH ARPTS HAVE FAIR AMOUNT OF STUDENT, CHARTER, AND FREIGHT TFC. LIKE MYSELF WHEN AN ACFT DEPARTS Y42 RWY 17, YOU'RE LOOKING STRAIGHT DOWN THE FINAL FOR RWY 18 AT IKV. IF SOMEONE SHOULD HAPPEN TO FLY A WIDE PATTERN OR STRETCH THEIR FINAL AT IKV AND HAVE A FULLY LOADED ACFT DEPART Y42 YOU'RE LOOKING AT THE POTENTIAL FOR A NEAR OR MIDAIR. THE FAA NEEDS TO GET THESE CLOSELY LOCATED ARPTS ON THE SAME FREQ.
