Narrative:
Location: 40 DME-dfw. Descending into dfw we were given 8000 ft as a level off. First officer was flying. I was completing the before landing checklist. I was preoccupied with trying to adjust my seat as the electric operation was inoperative and did not notice the first officer descending through 8000 ft. At approximately 7500 ft all 3 crew members noticed the deviation. The first officer began a climb back up to 8000 ft. At this time the controller gave us a further descent to 5000 ft and a change of frequency. There was no question or comment from the controllers and I do not believe there was ever any conflict with any other traffic. Supplemental information from acn 354070: jaggo arrival 45 NM southeast dfw. Started descent at 11000 ft. We did not level at 8000 ft. We either missed the altitude alert or somehow disconnected it. At 7500 ft the first officer noticed that he went through 8000 ft and started back up. New first officer flying aircraft, 3RD trip in this aircraft. Captain was looking out window for traffic and not watching first officer.

Title: DC10 FLC ALTDEV ALT OVERSHOT IN DSCNT PROC. ALT ALERTER NOT SET TO DSCNT ALT.
Narrative: LOCATION: 40 DME-DFW. DSNDING INTO DFW WE WERE GIVEN 8000 FT AS A LEVEL OFF. FO WAS FLYING. I WAS COMPLETING THE BEFORE LNDG CHKLIST. I WAS PREOCCUPIED WITH TRYING TO ADJUST MY SEAT AS THE ELECTRIC OP WAS INOP AND DID NOT NOTICE THE FO DSNDING THROUGH 8000 FT. AT APPROX 7500 FT ALL 3 CREW MEMBERS NOTICED THE DEV. THE FO BEGAN A CLB BACK UP TO 8000 FT. AT THIS TIME THE CTLR GAVE US A FURTHER DSCNT TO 5000 FT AND A CHANGE OF FREQ. THERE WAS NO QUESTION OR COMMENT FROM THE CTLRS AND I DO NOT BELIEVE THERE WAS EVER ANY CONFLICT WITH ANY OTHER TFC. SUPPLEMENTAL INFO FROM ACN 354070: JAGGO ARR 45 NM SE DFW. STARTED DSCNT AT 11000 FT. WE DID NOT LEVEL AT 8000 FT. WE EITHER MISSED THE ALT ALERT OR SOMEHOW DISCONNECTED IT. AT 7500 FT THE FO NOTICED THAT HE WENT THROUGH 8000 FT AND STARTED BACK UP. NEW FO FLYING ACFT, 3RD TRIP IN THIS ACFT. CAPT WAS LOOKING OUT WINDOW FOR TFC AND NOT WATCHING FO.
