Narrative:

While being vectored for the localizer runway 23 approach at bhm, flight was cleared to 2500 ft MSL 8-9 NM from airport. When we leveled off at 2500 ft MSL a GPWS warning was received (both light and verbal) for 'terrain.' I immediately executed a climb to 4000 ft MSL (the aircraft was IMC and at night). Approach control was notified of the GPWS warning and the climb to 4000 ft MSL immediately. The GPWS was tested after landing at bhm. No problems were found.
