Narrative:

Given clearance by ground control to taxi to runway 10C, no specific route given, taxi by taxiway D2, taxiway east and taxiway west, and crossed the safety area of runway 10C without clearance. Night conditions existed, we were 2 hours late, and it was a short taxi from the gate to the runway. The flight crew was running checklists, the first officer was setting speeds, stabilizer trim, and FMC, etc, with his head down in the cockpit. Myself, the international relief officer was checking to see if flight attendants were ready for takeoff by opening the door. This involved a poorly lit intersection (txwys east and west). Looking at that intersection in the daylight, being a safety area for runway 10C, there are no lights associated with the runway environment to give you a clue. The sign at the intersection of txwys west and east needs to have added '10C hold point, or line' to make it more visible.

Title: B767 FLC TAXIED ACROSS PIT RWY 10C SAFETY AREA WITHOUT A CLRNC. THE RPTR, A RELIEF PLT, RPTS THAT ASIDE FROM THE HUMAN FACTORS INVOLVED, THE RWY ENVIRONMENT AND THE TXWY INTXN WERE POORLY LIT, AND THEN THE SIGN AT TXWYS W AND E IS NOT CLRLY REPRESENTATIVE OF THE SAFETY AREA.

Narrative: GIVEN CLRNC BY GND CTL TO TAXI TO RWY 10C, NO SPECIFIC RTE GIVEN, TAXI BY TXWY D2, TXWY E AND TXWY W, AND CROSSED THE SAFETY AREA OF RWY 10C WITHOUT CLRNC. NIGHT CONDITIONS EXISTED, WE WERE 2 HRS LATE, AND IT WAS A SHORT TAXI FROM THE GATE TO THE RWY. THE FLC WAS RUNNING CHKLISTS, THE FO WAS SETTING SPDS, STABILIZER TRIM, AND FMC, ETC, WITH HIS HEAD DOWN IN THE COCKPIT. MYSELF, THE INTL RELIEF OFFICER WAS CHKING TO SEE IF FLT ATTENDANTS WERE READY FOR TKOF BY OPENING THE DOOR. THIS INVOLVED A POORLY LIT INTXN (TXWYS E AND W). LOOKING AT THAT INTXN IN THE DAYLIGHT, BEING A SAFETY AREA FOR RWY 10C, THERE ARE NO LIGHTS ASSOCIATED WITH THE RWY ENVIRONMENT TO GIVE YOU A CLUE. THE SIGN AT THE INTXN OF TXWYS W AND E NEEDS TO HAVE ADDED '10C HOLD POINT, OR LINE' TO MAKE IT MORE VISIBLE.
