Narrative:

Lost electrical power and alternator did not seem to be charging the battery. We were over the ocean outside the sna class C airspace. Radio worked enough to contact socal approach. They responded with 'proceed to john wayne, enter,' then radio stopped working. So, I squawked 7600 and proceeded. I circled twice over the 405 freeway, about 3-4 mi west of airport. I crossed over field above tower at 1300 ft. Looked for light gun signals and landing on runway 19L (instead of interfering with landing carrier on runway 19R). On the ground, waited until all traffic was clear of taxiway, then taxied to parking. No problem during taxi. While waiting in midfield runup, I watched for light signals. Called tower to inform what happened.
