Narrative:
En route from bil to fca in light to moderate turbulence, lost contact with ZLC on frequency 119.75. Last contact about 15 NM east of fca was descend to 11000 ft. Transmission very weak. Tried numerous times to contact ZLC to no avail on both radios. Could hear other aircraft but not center. Contacted gtf radio and fca unicom and reported our intentions to shoot instrument approach at fca and asked gtf radio to pass this report to ZLC. Descending through 9000 ft on approach course from fca, got a very loud call from slc to turn right 290 degrees and climb to 9000 ft, which we did. I don't know what frequency he was on to sound so clear but he switched us to a good frequency, thanked us for our help, and cleared us back to sak NDB to continue our approach. He also asked us who cleared us for the approach. We answered that we had lost communication and contacted gtf radio to state our position and intentions. We did not squawk 7600 as we were talking to 2 other facilities, gtf radio and fca unicom. I feel that our actions were correct in that we had lost communication with ZLC and were going into an uncontrolled airport. This was about the time slc would have switched us to unicom and so that's what we did.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: MLG ACFT LOST RADIO CONTACT WITH CTR, BUT ABLE TO COMMUNICATE WITH OTHER ARPT CTLRS. FLC STATED INTENTIONS FOR APCH TO DEST, UNCTLED ARPT AND TO PASS INFO TO CTR. DURING DSCNT THE CTR WAS ABLE TO RE-ESTABLISH COM AND PROVIDED FLC CLRNC.
Narrative: ENRTE FROM BIL TO FCA IN LIGHT TO MODERATE TURB, LOST CONTACT WITH ZLC ON FREQ 119.75. LAST CONTACT ABOUT 15 NM E OF FCA WAS DSND TO 11000 FT. XMISSION VERY WEAK. TRIED NUMEROUS TIMES TO CONTACT ZLC TO NO AVAIL ON BOTH RADIOS. COULD HEAR OTHER ACFT BUT NOT CTR. CONTACTED GTF RADIO AND FCA UNICOM AND RPTED OUR INTENTIONS TO SHOOT INST APCH AT FCA AND ASKED GTF RADIO TO PASS THIS RPT TO ZLC. DSNDING THROUGH 9000 FT ON APCH COURSE FROM FCA, GOT A VERY LOUD CALL FROM SLC TO TURN R 290 DEGS AND CLB TO 9000 FT, WHICH WE DID. I DON'T KNOW WHAT FREQ HE WAS ON TO SOUND SO CLR BUT HE SWITCHED US TO A GOOD FREQ, THANKED US FOR OUR HELP, AND CLRED US BACK TO SAK NDB TO CONTINUE OUR APCH. HE ALSO ASKED US WHO CLRED US FOR THE APCH. WE ANSWERED THAT WE HAD LOST COM AND CONTACTED GTF RADIO TO STATE OUR POS AND INTENTIONS. WE DID NOT SQUAWK 7600 AS WE WERE TALKING TO 2 OTHER FACILITIES, GTF RADIO AND FCA UNICOM. I FEEL THAT OUR ACTIONS WERE CORRECT IN THAT WE HAD LOST COM WITH ZLC AND WERE GOING INTO AN UNCTLED ARPT. THIS WAS ABOUT THE TIME SLC WOULD HAVE SWITCHED US TO UNICOM AND SO THAT'S WHAT WE DID.
