Narrative:
We were proceeding east on V137 to psp VOR and were cleared to descend to 7000 ft by psp approach control. I advised approach control that it was bumpy. As we approached leveloff at 7000 ft MSL, the captain and I were distraction by the turbulence, and inadvertently allowed the airplane to descend through our assigned altitude to approximately 6650 ft MSL, before climbing back up to 7000 ft MSL. At approximately 6650 ft MSL I told the controller we were having trouble with our altitude and we were then cleared to 5000 ft MSL. The psp approach controller made no mention of our altitude deviation and it smoothed out at 5000 ft. The remaining portion of our flight and landing at thermal, ca, was normal.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: A GULFSTREAM 3 DEVIATES FROM ASSIGNED ALT AS IT APCHS PSP, CA. ACFT WAS FLYING IN TURB.
Narrative: WE WERE PROCEEDING E ON V137 TO PSP VOR AND WERE CLRED TO DSND TO 7000 FT BY PSP APCH CTL. I ADVISED APCH CTL THAT IT WAS BUMPY. AS WE APCHED LEVELOFF AT 7000 FT MSL, THE CAPT AND I WERE DISTR BY THE TURB, AND INADVERTENTLY ALLOWED THE AIRPLANE TO DSND THROUGH OUR ASSIGNED ALT TO APPROX 6650 FT MSL, BEFORE CLBING BACK UP TO 7000 FT MSL. AT APPROX 6650 FT MSL I TOLD THE CTLR WE WERE HAVING TROUBLE WITH OUR ALT AND WE WERE THEN CLRED TO 5000 FT MSL. THE PSP APCH CTLR MADE NO MENTION OF OUR ALTDEV AND IT SMOOTHED OUT AT 5000 FT. THE REMAINING PORTION OF OUR FLT AND LNDG AT THERMAL, CA, WAS NORMAL.
