Narrative:
Upon landing at grr, maintenance was called regarding cabin address system, which malfunctioned during flight. Maintenance coordinator told crew item was deferrable as long as interphone system worked. My coordinator was told that chime was also inoperative and told crew that it was still deferrable. Despite objections of crew flight was dispatched to cvg. In-flight, several pertinent communications were required. Due to cabin duties, flight attendant couldn't be summoned (only call light on headset worked, no chime.) and once first officer had to open door to communicate. Red emergency light on call panels began flashing, even though no crew member pushed button. This caused unsafe communication situation, and distraction all crew members from duties.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: FLC OF AN LTT WITH 33 PAX AND A FLT ATTENDANT, CABIN ADDRESS SYS WAS INOP AND DEFERRED AS ALLOWED IF THE CABIN COCKPIT INTERPHONE SYS WAS WORKING. FLC DID NOT LIKE THE INCONVENIENCE AND BELIEVED IT TO BE UNSAFE.
Narrative: UPON LNDG AT GRR, MAINT WAS CALLED REGARDING CABIN ADDRESS SYS, WHICH MALFUNCTIONED DURING FLT. MAINT COORDINATOR TOLD CREW ITEM WAS DEFERRABLE AS LONG AS INTERPHONE SYS WORKED. MY COORDINATOR WAS TOLD THAT CHIME WAS ALSO INOP AND TOLD CREW THAT IT WAS STILL DEFERRABLE. DESPITE OBJECTIONS OF CREW FLT WAS DISPATCHED TO CVG. INFLT, SEVERAL PERTINENT COMS WERE REQUIRED. DUE TO CABIN DUTIES, FLT ATTENDANT COULDN'T BE SUMMONED (ONLY CALL LIGHT ON HEADSET WORKED, NO CHIME.) AND ONCE FO HAD TO OPEN DOOR TO COMMUNICATE. RED EMER LIGHT ON CALL PANELS BEGAN FLASHING, EVEN THOUGH NO CREW MEMBER PUSHED BUTTON. THIS CAUSED UNSAFE COM SIT, AND DISTR ALL CREW MEMBERS FROM DUTIES.
