Narrative:
During a cross country training flight, I became lost south of greenville, sc. After badly executing a lost procedure, I ended up about 20 mi west of intended landing, downtown spartanburg. I spent about 15 mins in greer airspace, before realizing where I was. Upon calling greer approach, they vectored me to spartanburg. I called greer tower and we discussed the incident at length for about 20 mins. We came to the conclusion I made several huge errors in judgement. They included: 1) failing to call greer approach when I first knew I was lost, 2) failure to properly initiate a lost procedure at an early time, 3) improper interpretation and application of VOR information, and 4) improperly interpreting what I was flying over compared to sectional. In all, this was a training flight, and was I ever trained.
