Narrative:
I contacted ground control, #1 at xx west gate, given clearance to 'taxi to runway 17.' I selected txwys P, right, and D, to hold short. At taxiway right, I stopped behind a lear jet on the taxiway. The lear then moved up and stopped short of runway 19 facing west. I then went behind him on taxiway right and turned corner onto taxiway D. When I switched to tower they said I had taxied on runway 19. I said no, that I was on taxiway right and had blue lights on my side at all times. They then said that I had crossed a hold short line that made that part of the taxiway the runway. I did not see the painted hold short line or lighted hold short markers (if they are there) but wrongly assumed that the lear jet in front of me was at the hold line for the runway and had moved there to let me go by. In fact, he was cleared on the runway by the tower which I did not hear on ground and had just stopped for some reason. Corrective action would be lighted hold short markers and full route taxi clearance from ground and not just 'taxi to.' if they saw me there maybe a radio call would have been nice!! Also I had taxi and landing light off to be courteous to other pilots landing and on the ground. I should not move the aircraft without full lights.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: CARGO SMT TAXIED ON A TXWY THAT ACTUALLY BECOMES PART OF A RWY. HE ENTERED THE RWY WITHOUT CLRNC. HE COULD HAVE CHOSEN A DIFFERENT TAXI RTE.
Narrative: I CONTACTED GND CTL, #1 AT XX W GATE, GIVEN CLRNC TO 'TAXI TO RWY 17.' I SELECTED TXWYS P, R, AND D, TO HOLD SHORT. AT TXWY R, I STOPPED BEHIND A LEAR JET ON THE TXWY. THE LEAR THEN MOVED UP AND STOPPED SHORT OF RWY 19 FACING W. I THEN WENT BEHIND HIM ON TXWY R AND TURNED CORNER ONTO TXWY D. WHEN I SWITCHED TO TWR THEY SAID I HAD TAXIED ON RWY 19. I SAID NO, THAT I WAS ON TXWY R AND HAD BLUE LIGHTS ON MY SIDE AT ALL TIMES. THEY THEN SAID THAT I HAD CROSSED A HOLD SHORT LINE THAT MADE THAT PART OF THE TXWY THE RWY. I DID NOT SEE THE PAINTED HOLD SHORT LINE OR LIGHTED HOLD SHORT MARKERS (IF THEY ARE THERE) BUT WRONGLY ASSUMED THAT THE LEAR JET IN FRONT OF ME WAS AT THE HOLD LINE FOR THE RWY AND HAD MOVED THERE TO LET ME GO BY. IN FACT, HE WAS CLRED ON THE RWY BY THE TWR WHICH I DID NOT HEAR ON GND AND HAD JUST STOPPED FOR SOME REASON. CORRECTIVE ACTION WOULD BE LIGHTED HOLD SHORT MARKERS AND FULL RTE TAXI CLRNC FROM GND AND NOT JUST 'TAXI TO.' IF THEY SAW ME THERE MAYBE A RADIO CALL WOULD HAVE BEEN NICE!! ALSO I HAD TAXI AND LNDG LIGHT OFF TO BE COURTEOUS TO OTHER PLTS LNDG AND ON THE GND. I SHOULD NOT MOVE THE ACFT WITHOUT FULL LIGHTS.
