Narrative:

We departed oak for a short scheduled flight to sjc. Assigned departure from oak was runway heading, cross 4 DME from oak at or below 2000 ft then climb to 5000 ft, radar vectors to sjc. We took off and contacted bay approach, they cleared us to climb to 5000 ft with radar vectors to woodside VOR (osi). Aircraft FMS/autoplt/autothrottles were engaged and leveled off at 5000 ft. We were cleared direct to osi VOR and proceeded as directed. About 10 NM northwest of osi, bay approach advised us to check our airspeed, ATC showed approximately 400 KTS ground speed. Our indicated airspeed showed approximately 300 KTS and we immediately slowed to 250 KTS. Bay approach continued to vector us and eventually cleared for a visual approach and landing at sjc. Because of the short flight (oak-sjc approximately 40 NM), required checklist accomplishment, radio calls to company, and constant visual traffic watch in the busy bay area, we failed to immediately notice that the autoplt/FMS system exceeded 250 KTS until advised by bay approach to check airspeed. A more timely monitoring of basic instruments, airspeed, altitude, etc, would have prevented us from exceeding 250 KTS. Supplemental information from acn 357420: believe cause was failure of self (person flying) to adequately monitor FMS/airspeed. Cause of speed increase unknown and not repeated. Second crew member was contacting operations at time.

Title: A300 CARGO OAK-SJC AT 5000 FT. FLC FAILED NOTE AIRSPD 300 KTS. CTLR QUERIED FLT AND IMMEDIATE SPD REDUCTION MADE. FLC BUSY ON SHORT FLT, CHKING FOR TFC, COMPANY CALLS, NO ONE MONITORING THE ACFT.

Narrative: WE DEPARTED OAK FOR A SHORT SCHEDULED FLT TO SJC. ASSIGNED DEP FROM OAK WAS RWY HEADING, CROSS 4 DME FROM OAK AT OR BELOW 2000 FT THEN CLB TO 5000 FT, RADAR VECTORS TO SJC. WE TOOK OFF AND CONTACTED BAY APCH, THEY CLRED US TO CLB TO 5000 FT WITH RADAR VECTORS TO WOODSIDE VOR (OSI). ACFT FMS/AUTOPLT/AUTOTHROTTLES WERE ENGAGED AND LEVELED OFF AT 5000 FT. WE WERE CLRED DIRECT TO OSI VOR AND PROCEEDED AS DIRECTED. ABOUT 10 NM NW OF OSI, BAY APCH ADVISED US TO CHK OUR AIRSPD, ATC SHOWED APPROX 400 KTS GND SPD. OUR INDICATED AIRSPD SHOWED APPROX 300 KTS AND WE IMMEDIATELY SLOWED TO 250 KTS. BAY APCH CONTINUED TO VECTOR US AND EVENTUALLY CLRED FOR A VISUAL APCH AND LNDG AT SJC. BECAUSE OF THE SHORT FLT (OAK-SJC APPROX 40 NM), REQUIRED CHKLIST ACCOMPLISHMENT, RADIO CALLS TO COMPANY, AND CONSTANT VISUAL TFC WATCH IN THE BUSY BAY AREA, WE FAILED TO IMMEDIATELY NOTICE THAT THE AUTOPLT/FMS SYS EXCEEDED 250 KTS UNTIL ADVISED BY BAY APCH TO CHK AIRSPD. A MORE TIMELY MONITORING OF BASIC INSTS, AIRSPD, ALT, ETC, WOULD HAVE PREVENTED US FROM EXCEEDING 250 KTS. SUPPLEMENTAL INFO FROM ACN 357420: BELIEVE CAUSE WAS FAILURE OF SELF (PERSON FLYING) TO ADEQUATELY MONITOR FMS/AIRSPD. CAUSE OF SPD INCREASE UNKNOWN AND NOT REPEATED. SECOND CREW MEMBER WAS CONTACTING OPS AT TIME.
