Narrative:

On climb out from msp heard and felt a loud thump as if we had hit something. About 10 seconds later master caution illuminated and ECAM door page came up showing forward cargo door in unsafe condition. Shortly after began to get strong unidentifiable fumes in aircraft. Asked for and received a leveloff clearance and vectors back for possible ILS. Called lead flight attendant to brief situation and other forward flight attendant complained about her eyes and sinuses burning from fumes. Declared an emergency, returned to msp where we were refueled and rereleased to our original destination after maintenance MEL'ed the cargo door indication and couldn't find any reason for fumes. (Aircraft had not been deiced, at least for this flight.) fumes came back on landing at destination though not as strong in msp.
